Problem

Healthcare During COVID-19

At the peak of COVID-19, many weren't able to receive medical treatment without risking their safety as hospitals and ICUs hit capacity and had no choice but to turn away patients to avoid spreading the disease.

The CDC estimated that about 41% of U.S adults delayed or avoided medical care including urgent or emergency care (12%) and routine care (32%) because of concerns about COVID-19.

Avoidance of urgent or emergency care was even higher among those with underlying medical conditions, people of color, young adults, and persons with disabilities.

“My patient was a man in his mid-70s with heart failure who on his 16th night in the hospital spiked a fever. By morning, he was transferred to the intensive care unit for shortness of breath. By noon, he was on a ventilator. By early evening, he was wrapped in a white plastic body bag with bedside monitors turned off…Could his infection have been from the hospital staff, such as doctors, nurses, care attendants, or physical and respiratory therapists who frequented the room to provide care?
